Maui Nō Ka ʻOi Magazine is the island’s premier publication, celebrating the people, culture, food, history, and natural beauty of Maui. Through immersive storytelling and stunning photography, we bring the island’s spirit to life for both residents and visitors. We are looking for freelance writers and photographers to contribute to our magazine, with a special need for a food writer to help us cover Maui’s incredible culinary scene.

Who We’re Looking For

We are seeking writers, photographers, or individuals who do both to contribute to Maui Nō Ka ʻOi. Our content explores:

• Travel & Adventure – Exploring Maui’s hidden gems, luxury resorts, outdoor activities, and unique experiences.
• Nature & Wildlife – Marine life, conservation efforts, landscapes, and environmental stories.
• History & Culture – The rich traditions, history, and people who shape Maui.
• Food & Drink (Priority Need!) – Restaurants, chefs, mixologists, bars, farms, and the diverse ethnic cuisines that make Maui a food lover’s paradise.
• People Profiles – In-depth stories about influential locals, cultural leaders, and unique island personalities.
• Arts & Community – Showcasing the vibrant arts, music, and cultural festivals of Maui.

Writers

We favor narrative journalism—writing that goes beyond the facts to immerse readers in the heart of a story. We especially need a skilled food writer who can authentically cover Maui’s dynamic culinary scene, from fine dining to food trucks and everything in between. Writers should have a deep connection to Maui, whether as a resident or a frequent visitor, and be able to write with an insider’s perspective.

Photographers

We look for photographers who can tell a story through their images, capturing not just the beauty of Maui but also the island’s culture, food, and people. Whether it’s a breathtaking beachscape, an intimate portrait of a chef, or a beautifully plated dish, we want images that make our readers feel like they’re experiencing Maui firsthand.

Compensation & Process

• Writers are paid per published word.
• Photographers are paid per published photo.
• We assign stories but also welcome your original story ideas.
