This person should be able to walk into any ESP, diagnose what's working and what isn't, and execute at a high level with minimal oversight.ResponsibilitiesStrategy & PlanningDevelop and execute email marketing strategies aligned with client growth goals (acquisition, retention, revenue, LTV)Build and maintain email calendars across campaigns, automations, and lifecycle flowsSegment audiences based on behavior, engagement, purchase history, and custom attributesAdvise on list growth strategies, lead magnet funnels, and opt-in architectureExecution & ProductionBuild, QA, and deploy emails across platforms (Klaviyo, Mailchimp, HubSpot, Salesforce, ActiveCampaign, or similar)Design and code responsive email templates (HTML/CSS proficiency expected)Set up and maintain automated flows: welcome series, abandoned cart, post-purchase, win-back, re-engagement, sunsetManage dynamic content, personalization tokens, and conditional logic within emailsTesting & OptimizationRun structured A/B and multivariate tests on subject lines, send times, content, CTAs, and layoutMonitor and improve key metrics: open rate, CTR, conversion rate, revenue per email, list growth rate, unsubscribe rateConduct deliverability audits — manage sender reputation, authentication (SPF, DKIM, DMARC), and inbox placementIdentify and resolve issues related to spam filtering, bounce rates, and blacklistingReporting & AnalysisBuild and deliver regular performance reports with actionable insightsAttribute email revenue accurately and communicate impact to stakeholdersBenchmark performance against industry standards and historical trendsCompliance & Best PracticesEnsure all campaigns comply with CAN-SPAM, GDPR, CCPA, and other applicable regulationsMaintain clean, healthy lists through proper hygiene practices and suppression managementRequirements4+ years hands-on experience managing email marketing programsExpert-level proficiency in at least one major ESP (Klaviyo strongly preferred)Strong HTML/CSS skills for email development and troubleshooting rendering issuesDeep understanding of deliverability, authentication protocols, and inbox placementExperience with audience segmentation, behavioral triggers, and lifecycle automationProven track record of improving email KPIs through testing and optimizationComfortable working across multiple client accounts simultaneouslyStrong copywriting instincts or experience collaborating closely with copywritersNice to HaveExperience in an agency environment managing multiple brandsFamiliarity with SMS/MMS marketing as a complement to emailExperience with CDP or data warehouse integrations (Segment, BigQuery, etc.)Proficiency with design tools (Figma, Canva) for rapid creative iterationExperience with ecommerce platforms (Shopify, WooCommerce) and their email integrationsWhat Success Looks LikeFlows and campaigns run on time with zero errorsDeliverability stays consistently above 95% inbox placementEmail channel revenue grows quarter over quarterClients see you as a strategic partner, not just a send buttonCulture Fit SignalYou take ownership without being told to.
